New York Nursing Continuing Education Requirements

RN Requirements

  • 3 hours of continuing education every 3 years (registration period)
  • Infection Control & Barrier Precautions: 4 contact hours — Every 4 years
  • Child Abuse Identification & Reporting: one-time
  • Sepsis Awareness (facility dependent): as-required
  • New York does not require general contact hours for RN registration renewal, but mandated trainings still apply.
  • Infection control coursework must come from an approved provider on a four-year cycle.

LPN Requirements

  • 3 hrs infection control every 4 years of continuing education each renewal period
  • LPN: Registration is generally every 3 years; however, the mandatory infection-control coursework has its own 4-year cycle.
  • Infection Control – 3 hrs every 4 years. Child Abuse – 2 hrs for RNs at required intervals/initial requirement.

Mandatory Reporting

To provide mandated reporters of child abuse with an overview of the following: When legally required to call the SCR When children and families may be more appropriately assisted through community-based services or other supports Reduce bias in the decision-making process of whether a call must be made to the SCR The impact of trauma and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) on children and families Protective factors and the supports that can be referred to families to in lieu of making a report.

Infection Control

The role of infection control is to reduce and prevent the risk for hospital-acquired infections. To practice effective infection control practices, the healthcare professional must be knowledgeable of methods to prevent infection transmission. This training encompasses the seven core elements on infection control and barrier precautions and covers the most current and scientifically accepted practices in infection control as recommended by the Center for Disease Control (CDC).
