Overview
After completing this course, the nurse will be able to distinguish possible impairment from a diagnosis, identify observable warning patterns, and take immediate steps to protect patients and preserve evidence. The nurse will also be able to follow employer and jurisdiction-specific reporting requirements, describe evaluation and treatment options, and explain how monitoring supports recovery and a safe return to practice.
Objectives
Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:
- Differentiate workplace impairment, substance use disorder, diversion, and fitness to practice.
- Identify behavioral, physical, performance, and medication-handling findings that warrant prompt assessment.
- Apply a patient-safety response to suspected on-duty impairment using objective documentation and the chain of command.
- Distinguish clinical assessment for substance use disorder from workplace toxicology testing.
- Describe evidence-based treatment options for alcohol and other substance use disorders.
- Explain how alternative-to-discipline programs, practice restrictions, and monitoring can support recovery and safe practice.
