Overview

After completing this course, nurses will be able to recognize possible child maltreatment, intimate partner violence, and elder abuse across healthcare settings. Learners will apply private, trauma-informed assessment methods and identify findings that require urgent intervention. Nurses will also be able to document objectively, preserve potential evidence, coordinate referrals, develop individualized discharge plans, and follow federal requirements, state law, and organizational reporting policy.

Objectives

Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:

  1. Differentiate child maltreatment, intimate partner violence, elder abuse, coercive control, exploitation, and neglect.
  2. Recognize clinical findings and contextual factors associated with family and domestic violence across the lifespan.
  3. Apply trauma-informed interviewing, immediate danger assessment, and evidence-based screening practices.
  4. Implement appropriate stabilization, diagnostic evaluation, evidence preservation, documentation, referral, and discharge interventions.
  5. Determine when suspected abuse must be reported under applicable law and organizational policy.
  6. Coordinate confidential, culturally responsive resources without increasing danger to the patient.
