Overview

After completing this course, the nurse will be able to recognize possible sex and labor trafficking without relying on stereotypes or expecting a patient to self-identify. The nurse will use private, trauma-informed assessment; qualified language services; focused physical and psychological evaluation; and objective documentation. The nurse will also be able to respond to immediate safety concerns, distinguish adult consent from mandatory reporting obligations, protect health information, consult appropriate resources, and coordinate patient-directed referrals across healthcare and community services.

Objectives

Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:

  1. Differentiate sex trafficking, labor trafficking, commercial sexual exploitation of a minor, and human smuggling.
  2. Apply the action-means-purpose framework to a potential trafficking situation.
  3. Recognize clinical, behavioral, environmental, and occupational indicators that warrant private assessment.
  4. Conduct trauma-informed physical and psychological assessments using patient-centered communication.
  5. Determine appropriate reporting, confidentiality, documentation, safety, and referral actions for adults and minors.
  6. Explain the protection, prosecution, and prevention framework of current federal anti-trafficking policy.
