Overview

After completing this course, the nurse will be able to recognize possible child maltreatment, intimate partner violence, and vulnerable-adult abuse; conduct a private, trauma-informed assessment; and address immediate clinical and safety needs. The nurse will also be able to distinguish supportive intervention from mandatory reporting, apply relevant Florida requirements, preserve potential evidence, document objectively, and connect patients with appropriate services.

Objectives

Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:

  1. Differentiate intimate partner violence, child maltreatment, elder abuse, vulnerable-adult abuse, and coercive control.
  2. Recognize clinical findings and behavioral indicators that warrant further assessment for domestic or family violence.
  3. Conduct a private, trauma-informed safety assessment using direct, nonjudgmental questions.
  4. Apply federal principles and current Florida requirements for reporting suspected child abuse, vulnerable-adult abuse, and specified violent injuries.
  5. Document disclosures, injuries, interventions, reports, and referrals using objective, clinically precise language.
  6. Develop a patient-centered discharge and referral plan that addresses immediate danger, communication safety, and follow-up care.
