Overview

This course examines how interpersonal, institutional, and structural discrimination affects the health and healthcare experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual and gender minority people. After completing the course, nurses will be able to use respectful terminology, collect clinically relevant information without assumptions, identify discrimination and violence, respond to unsafe practices, and connect patients with appropriate clinical and community resources.

Objectives

Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:

  1. Differentiate sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, sex characteristics, and related clinical terminology.
  2. Identify interpersonal, institutional, and structural forms of discrimination that can affect LGBTQ+ patients and families.
  3. Apply trauma-informed and affirming communication during assessment, documentation, care planning, and discharge.
  4. Assess LGBTQ+ patients for violence, coercion, housing instability, mental health concerns, and barriers to healthcare without stereotyping.
  5. Describe evidence-based nursing responses to conversion practices, discriminatory conduct, and denial of medically indicated care.
  6. Develop an individualized plan to reduce barriers and support equitable follow-up care.
