Overview

This course prepares nurses to assess each patient’s cultural, communication, functional, religious, and identity-related needs without relying on assumptions. Learners will apply cultural humility, qualified language assistance, accessible communication, and shared decision-making in routine and high-risk care. After completing the course, nurses will be able to recognize bias and structural barriers, adapt clinical communication, support patient rights, and participate in organizational efforts to measure and improve equitable care.

Objectives

Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:

1. Differentiate cultural competence, cultural humility, cultural safety, implicit bias, intersectionality, and stereotyping.
2. Perform an individualized cultural and communication assessment using respectful, clinically relevant questions.
3. Apply evidence-based communication practices for patients with limited English proficiency, disabilities, low health literacy, or differing communication preferences.
4. Analyze how age, race, ethnicity, military experience, religion, spirituality, sexual orientation, and gender identity may affect care without stereotyping.
5. Implement nursing actions that reduce bias, improve shared decision-making, and support equitable clinical outcomes.
6. Summarize major federal requirements governing nondiscrimination, language access, disability accommodation, privacy, and emergency care.
