Overview
After completing this course, nurses will be able to connect blood pressure regulation with chronic kidney disease progression, recognize hypertensive emergencies and kidney failure complications, and interpret essential assessment findings. Learners will also be able to support evidence-based medication management, dialysis and transplant care, accurate blood pressure measurement, interdisciplinary coordination, and practical patient education.
Objectives
Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:
- Classify adult blood pressure using current American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association categories and confirm elevated readings with accurate measurement.
- Explain the bidirectional pathophysiologic relationship between sustained hypertension and progressive chronic kidney disease.
- Differentiate uncontrolled hypertension, apparent treatment-resistant hypertension, and hypertensive emergency using clinical findings.
- Assess patients with advanced chronic kidney disease for fluid, electrolyte, cardiovascular, neurologic, medication-related, and dialysis-access complications.
- Compare conservative kidney management, hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and kidney transplantation.
- Apply nursing considerations for antihypertensive therapy, kidney replacement therapy, monitoring, care coordination, and patient education.
