Overview
This course prepares nurses to recognize atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk, collect accurate assessment data, and apply current prevention recommendations in collaboration with the patient and prescribing clinician. After completing the course, the nurse will be able to support lifestyle change, monitor lipid-lowering and antiplatelet therapy, identify adverse effects, and communicate findings that require treatment or urgent evaluation.
Objectives
Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:
- Differentiate atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis, and clinical atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
- Assess modifiable and nonmodifiable cardiovascular risk factors using accurate clinical measurements and a focused history.
- Interpret estimated cardiovascular risk within the limits of the selected risk calculator.
- Implement evidence-based nursing interventions for tobacco use, nutrition, physical activity, weight, blood pressure, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease.
- Monitor the effectiveness and safety of statin and nonstatin lipid-lowering therapy.
- Distinguish appropriate primary-prevention and secondary-prevention uses of antiplatelet therapy.
