Overview

This course provides an overview of short assignments in hospitals, clinics, and long-term care. Eight integrated topics address workforce pressures and portable responsibilities; orientation, competencies, equipment, and electronic records; joining an unfamiliar team; handoff and closed-loop communication; error prevention and reporting; infection prevention; falls, consent, and documentation.

Objectives

Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:

  1. Explain how shortages, turnover, workforce distribution, and organizational conditions can shape assignment pressures without establishing a universal safe workload.
  2. Construct a pre-shift verification plan addressing expected activities, orientation gaps, support resources, and escalation pathways as an educational application of systems safety.
  3. Separate prior experience from assignment-specific competency verification and refer scope and delegation questions to the state board and receiving facility.
  4. Plan authorized instruction and supervised verification for unfamiliar equipment without importing operating practices from previous assignments.
  5. Identify electronic-record learning needs and distinguish actual observations from unverified completion or copied assumptions.
  6. Communicate workload concerns using patient needs, outstanding activities, available assistance, and explicit requests rather than census alone.
  7. Establish team roles and task ownership while avoiding stereotypes about accent, education, identity, or professional background.
  8. Apply individualized therapeutic communication that considers distress, language, cultural preferences, and personal safety.
  9. Use structured handoff and the three-step closed-loop model while distinguishing acknowledgment from task completion.
  10. Recognize errors and near misses, seek appropriate immediate assistance, and contribute objective information to systems review.
  11. Support transparent reporting and non-retaliation for good-faith concerns without promising unverified legal protections.
  12. Apply the hand hygiene indications described in R6 while verifying current local products, isolation arrangements, and supply pathways.
  13. Connect multifactorial fall-risk observations with the receiving facility's assessment, assistance, and escalation processes without prescribing restrictions.
  14. Recognize unresolved consent understanding and support everyday language, teach-back, appropriate referral, and accurate documentation.
  15. Identify workplace violence, fatigue, and burnout concerns and seek organizational and personal support through verified pathways.
  16. Integrate patient-stated identity, religious preferences, language access, health literacy, and cost barriers into equitable coordination and escalation.
