Overview

4 contact hours nursing continuing education course: Transplant Nursing: Monitoring, Education and Long-Term Care.

Objectives

Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe nursing responsibilities across evaluation, waiting, transplantation, and long-term follow-up without assuming physician or allocation-authority functions.
  2. Organize candidate histories addressing disease severity, comorbidity, frailty, functional change, and psychosocial support for multidisciplinary review.
  3. Explain why kidney failure and heart failure treatment continue during transplant evaluation and waiting.
  4. Use individualized postoperative orders to organize graft observations without inventing universal thresholds or treatment responses.
  5. Differentiate early heart graft dysfunction from an automatic diagnosis of immune rejection.
  6. Recognize supported kidney, heart, and lung rejection signals while acknowledging missing liver-specific diagnostic detail.
  7. Distinguish chronic immune rejection from medication toxicity, recurrent disease, infection, and other causes of graft dysfunction.
  8. Compare obstructive and restrictive chronic lung allograft dysfunction phenotypes while recognizing inconsistent source timing descriptions.
  9. Explain calcineurin inhibitor and corticosteroid mechanisms without converting pharmacology into prescribing instructions.
  10. Identify cyclosporine monitoring needs, tacrolimus formulation concerns, and supported corticosteroid adverse effects.
  11. Distinguish CMV infection from CMV disease and explain why negative blood testing may not exclude localized reactivation.
  12. Apply standard precautions and obtain pathogen-specific guidance rather than assigning isolation solely from transplant status.
  13. Distinguish donor-against-host GVHD from recipient-against-graft rejection using the settings and classification described in the source.
  14. Connect long-term graft surveillance with kidney injury, metabolic disease, cardiovascular disease, malignancy, and bone-health concerns.
  15. Develop understandable, patient-centered medication and self-monitoring teaching that addresses access barriers without independently changing therapy.
  16. Communicate urgent concerns with objective trends, medication history, uncertainty, named receiving clinicians, and documented follow-through.
