Overview

5 contact hours nursing continuing education course: Pulmonary Nursing: Respiratory Assessment and Patient Education.

Objectives

Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:

  1. Elicit the patient's description, onset, trajectory, associated symptoms, and functional impact of dyspnea without presuming its cause.
  2. Prioritize airway, breathing, circulation, and timely escalation over routine education when respiratory safety is uncertain.
  3. Explain what pulse oximetry estimates and why it cannot establish adequate ventilation or tissue oxygen delivery by itself.
  4. Recognize signal interference and pigmentation-related limitations while documenting actual readings without unsupported correction.
  5. Describe FEV1, FVC, and their ratio as supportive pulmonary-function measurements requiring contextual interpretation.
  6. Assess spirometry readiness, consent, preparation instructions, effort dependence, and tolerance within demonstrated competency.
  7. Recognize COPD-associated symptoms and relevant tobacco, environmental, occupational, and host factors without assigning blame.
  8. Teach changes from the COPD baseline and help-seeking through an individualized, authorized action plan.
  9. Explore variable asthma symptoms, possible triggers, occupational patterns, and barriers to exposure reduction.
  10. Support education about the actual prescribed inhaled plan and recognize deterioration despite reduced audible wheezing.
  11. Verify that oxygen implementation and monitoring match the authorized order and applicable protocol.
  12. Explain home oxygen fire hazards, equipment-support arrangements, written education, and planned reassessment.
  13. Recognize possible oxygenation or ventilation failure without waiting for definitive diagnostic classification.
  14. Communicate pulmonary embolism symptoms and risk factors promptly without declaring an unconfirmed diagnosis.
  15. Support individualized education and referral for sleep apnea, bronchiectasis, pulmonary fibrosis, and pleural effusion.
  16. Evaluate rehabilitation through symptoms, function, quality of life, informed participation, and access rather than spirometry alone.
