Overview
This course develops assessment, recognition, escalation, and patient-education skills across eight topics: dyspnea assessment; oxygenation monitoring and measurement equity; spirometry; COPD; asthma; oxygen and home safety; respiratory deterioration and pulmonary embolism; and long-term respiratory care with outcome review. Integrate the patient's account, examination, measurement quality, and clinical trajectory rather than diagnosing from an isolated symptom or value. (Suha et al., 2025)(Torp et al., 2023)(Lamb et al., 2023) Oxygen is a treatment requiring an order; administration and changes must follow the authorized clinician order and applicable protocol, including an authorized emergency protocol when relevant.
Objectives
Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:
- Relate individual nursing encounters to population monitoring, service linkage, and evaluation without generalizing from one person.
- Organize public health responsibilities into assessment, policy development, and assurance as a teaching framework.
- Differentiate prevention purposes using vaccination, cancer screening, and ongoing care management examples.
- Construct a proposed surveillance question that identifies the population, information needed, and accountable decision-maker.
- Distinguish suspected illness, screening findings, confirmed diagnoses, and unresolved information in surveillance records.
- Verify jurisdiction-specific reporting, screening, and immunization requirements through the responsible health authority.
- Prioritize clinical referral in an illustrative influenza investigation without waiting for administrative completeness.
- Interpret negative rapid influenza antigen results cautiously and explain why vaccination does not confer immediate protection.
- Plan immunization review around current authorized guidance, individual circumstances, informed consent, and safe preparation.
- Separate vaccination questions, possible contraindications, incomplete records, and practical barriers during respectful conversations.
- Design a tuberculosis screening-to-care pathway that includes result ownership and evaluation for active disease.
- Explain why TST and IGRA cannot independently exclude active tuberculosis or demonstrate treatment success.
- Coordinate confidential STI assessment and authorized partner-service consultation without inventing disease-specific procedures.
- Explain cancer screening benefits and harms while supporting appropriate diagnostic follow-up and informed choices.
- Apply lead, obesity, and hand hygiene evidence to illustrative community-service cases without overstating population evidence.
- Evaluate completed care, accessibility, quality, participant experience, and unresolved needs rather than activity counts alone.
