Overview

This course connects oral findings with comfort, nutrition, communication, infection risk, and timely referral. It covers eight areas that relate to oral and dental health.

Objectives

Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:

  1. Connect oral symptoms with comfort, eating, drinking, communication, and infection concerns during whole-person assessment.
  2. Explain tooth eruption, emergence, bone remodeling, and the limits of the available developmental timetable evidence.
  3. Apply a consistent, policy-based oral inspection sequence while recognizing that it is an instructional synthesis.
  4. Document lesion morphology, duration, functional effects, examination limitations, escalation, and follow-up responsibility.
  5. Recognize possible early and advanced caries findings without independently determining lesion activity or restorative needs.
  6. Assess frequent carbohydrate exposure, fluoride exposure, dryness, cleaning capacity, and access barriers relevant to prevention.
  7. Explain fluoride's topical mechanisms while routing product selection and prescribing to the dentist or prescriber.
  8. Distinguish gingival inflammation from the attachment and bone destruction characteristic of periodontitis.
  9. Recognize the sudden pain, bleeding, and interdental necrosis pattern requiring prompt assessment for ANUG.
  10. Identify candidiasis-associated findings and risk factors without treating every white lesion as thrush.
  11. Assess recurrent aphthous ulcers and urgently refer persistent lesions without independently deciding biopsy.
  12. Investigate xerostomia symptoms and possible medication or systemic contributors rather than attributing dryness to age alone.
  13. Assess cancer-treatment mucositis using the selected scale and actual intake without mixing grading systems.
  14. Prioritize emergency escalation for a threatening deep-space infection pattern before routine dental assessment.
  15. Assess jaw pain and restricted opening in context, distinguishing routine referral needs from infection-related red flags.
  16. Individualize daily mouth care and handoff for dependent, older, intubated, and cognitively impaired patients under current policy.
