Neonatal Nursing: Assessment, Developmental Care and Safety

3 contact hours nursing continuing education course: Neonatal Nursing: Assessment, Developmental Care and Safety.

A nurse in light blue scrubs stands beside an open infant warmer under a radiant heat panel, one hand resting gently on a swaddled newborn who wears a knitted cap. A vital signs monitor and gas flow gauges are visible on the wall unit behind the warmer.

Overview

3 contact hours nursing continuing education course: Neonatal Nursing: Assessment, Developmental Care and Safety.

Objectives

Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe the routine newborn interventions of the first hour and the timing the retrieved review states for each.
  2. Explain what the Apgar score is used for and why delivery-room staff must know the neonatal resuscitation guidelines and equipment.
  3. Perform a structured head-to-toe newborn assessment and distinguish common benign skin and scalp findings from findings that require escalation.
  4. Describe hip, spine, palate, eye and femoral pulse assessment and the specific findings the retrieved review says should prompt further evaluation.
  5. Summarise the delivery-room evidence for preventing hypothermia in preterm and low-birth-weight infants, including which interventions the review supports and how strongly.
  6. Explain transitional glucose physiology after cord clamping and why the widely used numerical definition of neonatal hypoglycemia is contested.
  7. Identify the infant groups the retrieved review names as most commonly affected by neonatal hypoglycemia and the mechanisms behind each.
  8. Differentiate physiologic from pathologic unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia using the retrieved timing and rate criteria, and describe how bilirubin is measured.
  9. Compare transient tachypnea of the newborn with respiratory distress syndrome in mechanism, population and course as described in the retrieved reviews.
  10. Recognise early- and late-onset neonatal sepsis risk and explain why prompt therapy and antibiotic stewardship are argued for together.
  11. Support feeding and kangaroo mother care using the retrieved World Health Organization definitions, conditions and evidence limits.
  12. Teach the retrieved safe sleep actions to families and explain the purpose and limits of newborn dried blood spot screening.
  13. Assess comfort and distress in an infant who cannot self-report using observational and physiologic indicators, and state what this course does not teach about analgesia.
