Military and Uniformed Services Nursing: Service History, Deployment-Related Health and Trauma-Informed Care

3 contact hours nursing continuing education course: Military and Uniformed Services Nursing: Service History, Deployment-Related Health and Trauma-Informed Care.

A nurse in navy scrubs sits at eye level on a stool in an outpatient exam room, an open intake clipboard resting on her knee and a pen in her hand, listening while a middle-aged man in a plain grey t-shirt seated in the exam chair speaks to her. A blood pressure cuff and diagnostic instruments hang on the wall behind them.

Overview

3 contact hours nursing continuing education course: Military and Uniformed Services Nursing: Service History, Deployment-Related Health and Trauma-Informed Care.

Objectives

Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:

  1. Explain why asking every patient whether they have ever served in the military changes the assessment that follows, and describe the initiative that emphasised this.
  2. State how much of the United States population has served or is serving, and explain why most of this care happens outside federal facilities.
  3. Describe the post-traumatic stress disorder symptom clusters and the functional impairment criterion required for formal diagnosis.
  4. Name self-report screening scales used for post-traumatic stress disorder and explain the difference between a positive screen and a diagnosis.
  5. Summarise the retrieved prevalence and risk-factor evidence for deployment-related post-traumatic stress disorder and depression without overstating it.
  6. Administer and interpret depression and alcohol screening instruments within nursing scope, including their stated sensitivity and specificity limits.
  7. Assess suicide risk using the retrieved approach while acknowledging the documented weakness of prediction tools.
  8. Define moral injury and a potentially morally injurious event, and explain why the concept is contested rather than settled.
  9. Classify traumatic brain injury severity using the retrieved parameters and describe the prognostic implications of the initial score.
  10. Explain why comorbid mild traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder are difficult to distinguish and what the evidence base does not yet answer.
  11. Provide trauma-informed care to a patient disclosing sexual assault, including the assessment elements the retrieved review calls essential.
  12. Describe deployment-related environmental exposure concerns and adjustment disorder prevalence as retrieved, and document exposure history appropriately.
