  1. Define the postpartum period and describe the physiologic adaptations a nurse expects during it.
  2. Perform and document a BUBBLE-EE focused postpartum assessment and state what each component evaluates.
  3. Distinguish the three stages of lochia by timing, colour and composition, and identify findings that require escalation.
  4. State both the traditional and the 2017 definitions of postpartum hemorrhage and explain why estimated blood loss is unreliable.
  5. Identify the 4 T's of postpartum hemorrhage, name the most common cause and its share of cases, and list associated risk factors.
  6. Describe the nursing first response to postpartum hemorrhage, including access, blood loss assessment and bimanual massage.
  7. Explain the hormonal control and staged composition of human milk and support an effective latch.
  8. Describe the newborn's first-day assessment, the Apgar score and the signs of respiratory distress that require urgent attention.
  9. Teach safe infant sleep in the context of what sudden unexpected infant death is and how it is counted.
  10. Differentiate physiologic from pathologic neonatal jaundice and state which timing of onset must be reported.
  11. Distinguish baby blues from postpartum depression using the retrieved prevalence and diagnostic framing.
  12. Plan discharge teaching for the family that reflects postnatal care as a continuum rather than a single visit.
