Objectives

Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:

  1. Distinguish complementary, alternative and integrative health using current federal definitions, and explain why the distinction changes the nursing response.
  2. Describe how commonly complementary approaches are used by adults and children in the United States, and which approaches are used most.
  3. Take a complete complementary-use history, including supplements, that a patient is willing to answer honestly.
  4. Interpret statements such as may help or evidence is limited without either overselling or dismissing an approach.
  5. Explain what nonspecific effects are and why sham-controlled comparisons matter when reading acupuncture research.
  6. Describe meditation and mindfulness practices, their reported benefits and the current limits of safety data.
  7. Identify conditions and situations that call for modification or supervision of yoga and other movement practices.
  8. State the known and the rare risks of massage therapy and of improperly delivered acupuncture.
  9. Explain how dietary and herbal supplements are regulated and why label contents cannot be assumed accurate.
  10. Screen for supplement-related risk before surgery, during cancer treatment, in pregnancy and in children.
  11. Document complementary use and communicate it to the team so that interactions are visible to prescribers.
  12. Respond to a patient who wishes to replace conventional treatment with an alternative approach without ending the relationship.
