Objectives

- Describe what anemia is and interpret a low hemoglobin result in the context of the patient's symptoms, history and rate of change.
- Differentiate the common anemias, including iron-deficiency, vitamin B12-deficiency, hemolytic and aplastic anemia, by their underlying mechanism.
- Explain the nursing role in iron-replacement therapy, including expected response time, common gastrointestinal side effects and dietary teaching.
- Describe the inheritance, newborn-screening detection and multisystem effects of sickle cell disease, and distinguish disease from sickle cell trait.
- Recognize bleeding signs associated with thrombocytopenia and inherited factor deficiencies, and describe appropriate protective nursing measures.
- Identify the signs and symptoms of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism and describe the nursing response to a suspected clot.
- Explain anticoagulant and antiplatelet safety teaching, including bleeding precautions, interaction awareness and what the patient should report.
- Describe infection risk and supportive-care priorities for a patient receiving treatment for acute leukemia.
- Apply a structured verification and monitoring routine to blood component administration and describe recognition of a suspected transfusion reaction.
- Identify the limits of nursing scope in hematology care and the point at which findings must be escalated to the prescriber.
