Diabetes Nursing: Monitoring, Education and Safe Treatment Support

This course prepares nurses to support safe, person-centered diabetes care across monitoring, medication education, acute event recognition, complication prevention, and team coordination. Nurses will interpret blood glucose and A1C patterns, explain CGM concepts, reinforce prescribed insulin and non-insulin therapy, respond to hypoglycemia, recognize hyperglycemia and ketone-related danger, teach sick-day and daily self-management, assess feet and neuropathy risks, and coordinate screening and escalation with the prescribing clinician and diabetes educator.

An older adult points to medicine containers on a table while a nurse listens beside an open tote bag.

Overview

This course prepares nurses to support safe, person-centered diabetes care across monitoring, medication education, acute event recognition, complication prevention, and team coordination. Nurses will interpret blood glucose and A1C patterns, explain CGM concepts, reinforce prescribed insulin and non-insulin therapy, respond to hypoglycemia, recognize hyperglycemia and ketone-related danger, teach sick-day and daily self-management, assess feet and neuropathy risks, and coordinate screening and escalation with the prescribing clinician and diabetes educator.

Objectives

Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:

  1. Differentiate point-in-time blood glucose results from A1C, which reflects average blood glucose over the previous 3 months, while applying individualized goals established by the health care team.
  2. Demonstrate safe blood glucose monitoring, result documentation, pattern reporting, and appropriate comparison of CGM readings with a standard blood glucose meter when indicated.
  3. Classify insulin by onset, peak, and duration and compare insulin with non-insulin medicine categories, routes, hypoglycemia considerations, and nurse scope boundaries.
  4. Recognize manifestations of hypoglycemia and implement the established response using 15 to 20 grams of glucose or carbohydrate with reassessment after 15 minutes when appropriate.
  5. Identify hyperglycemia, elevated-ketone concerns, and findings requiring prompt escalation because untreated high ketone levels may progress to diabetic ketoacidosis.
  6. Teach individualized sick-day and daily self-management practices addressing monitoring, medication adherence, food and fluid intake concerns, activity, recordkeeping, and clinician contact.
  7. Assess feet for skin changes and neuropathic symptoms and teach daily inspection, hygiene, footwear protection, and prompt reporting of wounds or infection findings.
  8. Coordinate surveillance, referrals, and communication related to eye, kidney, cardiovascular, neurologic, dental, skin, and foot complications with the prescribing clinician and diabetes care team.
