Objectives
Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:
- Describe the correctional nurse's role and explain how clinical and custody responsibilities remain distinct in daily practice.
- Conduct intake screening that identifies withdrawal, self-harm, pregnancy, medication continuity and communicable disease risks.
- Explain why medication continuity is achieved only when the next dose is given, and how transfers threaten it.
- Triage requests for care, state the limits of cell-door assessment, and escalate access failures with clinical specificity.
- Apply standard precautions and communicable disease follow-through, including the required sequence after a positive tuberculosis test.
- Recognise and monitor withdrawal, and identify what is escalated to a prescriber rather than decided by nursing.
- Respond to suicide risk and self-harm in custody, including means reduction and observation requirements.
- Carry out the required response to an allegation of sexual abuse, including reporting, first responder duties and offered care.
