Continuing Education Credit Designation

This educational activity is credited for 3 contact hours at completion of the activity.

Overview

This nursing continuing-education course discusses population-focused practice: the ten essential public health services, denominators and honest population claims, community assessment with place-based data and local verification, the five social determinant domains, prevention levels and screening linkage, communicable disease and home visiting practice, suicide prevention within nursing scope, and partnership, privacy and program evaluation.

Objectives

Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe the ten essential public health services and locate community nursing activities within them.
  2. Distinguish population-focused practice from individual care by attaching denominators and stating what a caseload can and cannot support.
  3. Use place-based vulnerability data for anticipatory planning without inferring individual patient risk.
  4. Apply the five social determinant domains as an assessment checklist that exposes fatal plan assumptions.
  5. Classify activities by prevention level and identify the linkage measure that determines whether screening achieved anything.
  6. Explain the required sequence after a positive tuberculosis test and the nursing responsibilities within it.
  7. Conduct home visits and contact work that maintain standard precautions and limit disclosure to the minimum necessary.
  8. Recognise suicide risk in ordinary encounters and take the immediate actions available within nursing scope.
