Burn Nursing: Assessment, Stabilization and Recovery
This course equips licensed nurses to assess burn cause, depth, extent, and location; stabilize airway, breathing, and circulation; stop the burning process; cool and cover injuries safely; and recognize inhalation injury, shock, and other high-risk findings. It also addresses escalation and referral, ordered wound and pain care, infection surveillance, nutrition, mobility, scarring, psychosocial recovery, and nursing-scope boundaries. Serious burns may impair function, scar, become infected, or require airway support, wound cleaning, skin replacement, fluids, and nutrition.

Objectives
Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:
- Differentiate superficial, partial-thickness, and full-thickness burns using affected skin layers and presenting characteristics.
- Estimate burn extent and document cause, depth, location, total body surface area, symptoms, and associated trauma to support clinical decisions.
- Prioritize immediate stabilization by stopping the burning process, assessing airway and breathing, supporting circulation, cooling minor burns appropriately, covering wounds, and preventing shock and excessive cooling.
- Recognize findings associated with inhalation injury, progressive swelling, shock, and circumferential burns that require immediate escalation.
- Apply escalation and referral criteria based on burn depth, extent, location, cause, smoke exposure, shock, age-related risk, and uncertainty about severity.
- Implement ordered and protocol-directed wound care, pain management, infection surveillance, hydration monitoring, and nutritional support without exceeding nursing authority.
- Support mobility, contracture prevention, scar awareness, and psychosocial recovery through reassessment, education, reassurance, and interdisciplinary referral.
- Distinguish independent nursing actions from interventions requiring an ordering clinician, burn-center direction, facility protocol, manufacturer instructions, or verification with the state board of nursing.
