Overview

4 contact hours nursing continuing education course: Aesthetic Nursing: Patient Assessment, Safety and Complication Recognition.

Objectives

Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:

  1. Elicit patient-defined appearance goals without imposing beauty ideals or promising broader life changes.
  2. Collect prior treatment, allergy, medicine, skin disease, and healing histories relevant to clinician assessment.
  3. Identify unresolved findings that warrant deferral and qualified review before elective treatment.
  4. Explain variable benefits, temporary effects, maintenance considerations, and limitations of filler removal.
  5. Support voluntary consent through plain language, communication assistance, alternatives, and teach-back.
  6. Recognize appearance preoccupation, repetitive behaviors, and functional impairment warranting qualified BDD assessment.
  7. Describe skin integrity, symptoms, and pigment changes without using skin tone as a substitute for individualized assessment.
  8. Connect diabetes, smoking, and nutritional concerns with potential impairment of tissue repair.
  9. Distinguish botulinum toxin's intended temporary effect from concerning visual, swallowing, or breathing symptoms.
  10. Verify filler information against product-specific labeling rather than assuming approval applies to every use.
  11. Recognize filler-associated vascular warning signs and prioritize immediate emergency escalation.
  12. Identify chemical peel and laser risks requiring clinician review, including injury, infection, and dyspigmentation.
  13. Recognize suspected anaphylaxis or local anesthetic toxicity without requiring diagnostic certainty before emergency activation.
  14. Differentiate routine recovery review from urgent wound assessment and immediate emergency response.
  15. Document reports, observations, understanding, uncertainty, referrals, and handoffs accurately and respectfully.
  16. Distinguish secondary clinical references from FDA materials and recognize the limits of this educational activity.
