Overview
After completing this course, nurses will be able to distinguish preeclampsia with and without severe features, recognize HELLP syndrome, and identify findings that require immediate escalation. Learners will also be able to support evidence-based prevention, maternal and fetal surveillance, emergency treatment, delivery planning, postpartum monitoring, discharge teaching, and long-term follow-up.
Objectives
Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:
- Differentiate chronic hypertension, gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, eclampsia, and HELLP syndrome using current diagnostic criteria.
- Identify maternal history, assessment findings, and laboratory results associated with preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome.
- Initiate timely nursing actions for acute-onset severe hypertension, neurologic symptoms, pulmonary edema, eclampsia, and clinical deterioration.
- Apply safe monitoring principles for antihypertensive therapy and magnesium sulfate.
- Describe fetal and neonatal risks and the surveillance used to identify placental insufficiency or fetal compromise.
- Develop discharge education and follow-up priorities for patients affected by hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.
