Course Purpose

Build nursing competence in recognizing, assessing, escalating, and coordinating evidence-based care for infants and children with growth faltering.

Continuing Education Credit Designation

This educational activity is credited for 3 contact hours at completion of the activity.

Overview

After completing this course, the nurse will be able to identify concerning growth patterns, obtain accurate measurements, assess feeding and psychosocial factors, and recognize findings that require urgent evaluation. The nurse will also be able to support individualized nutrition and feeding plans, monitor response to treatment, prevent refeeding complications, and coordinate multidisciplinary follow-up.

Objectives

Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:

  1. Differentiate growth faltering from expected variations in pediatric growth.
  2. Identify medical, nutritional, feeding-skill, developmental, and psychosocial contributors to growth faltering.
  3. Perform and document an accurate nursing assessment of anthropometric measurements, dietary intake, feeding behavior, development, and safety.
  4. Apply an evidence-based diagnostic pathway that uses targeted testing rather than indiscriminate laboratory screening.
  5. Implement and evaluate individualized nutrition, feeding, safety, and follow-up interventions within the nurse's scope of practice.
  6. Recognize clinical instability, severe malnutrition, refeeding risk, possible maltreatment, and other indications for urgent escalation.
