Overview

This course reviews current diabetes classification, clinical presentation, diagnostic criteria, individualized treatment, glycemic monitoring, and prevention of acute and chronic complications. After completing the course, nurses will be able to recognize urgent glycemic events, support evidence-based treatment plans, teach safe self-management, and coordinate recommended screening and follow-up.

Objectives

Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:

  1. Differentiate type 1, type 2, gestational, and monogenic diabetes by pathophysiology and clinical presentation.
  2. Apply current laboratory criteria to identify diabetes and prediabetes and determine when confirmatory testing is required.
  3. Perform a focused nursing assessment for hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, diabetic ketoacidosis, hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state, and chronic complications.
  4. Explain individualized glucose targets and major nonpharmacologic, insulin, and noninsulin treatment approaches.
  5. Implement evidence-based nursing interventions for medication safety, glucose monitoring, sick-day management, foot care, and risk reduction.
  6. Identify recommended screening and follow-up intervals for adults at risk for diabetes and people with established disease.
