Overview

After completing this course, nurses will be able to assess common acute, chronic, behavioral health, infectious disease, and withdrawal-related needs of patients in correctional settings. Learners will apply structured triage, therapeutic communication, medication safety, emergency response, and continuity-of-care practices. Nurses will also be able to protect confidentiality, document clinical decisions, maintain professional boundaries, collaborate appropriately with custody personnel, and respond to legal, ethical, and workplace-safety concerns within their scope of practice.

Objectives

Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:

  1. Differentiate the healthcare needs and rights of an incarcerated patient from the person’s custody status or legal classification.
  2. Apply a structured nursing process to intake screening, sick-call triage, medication administration, chronic disease management, withdrawal monitoring, and emergency response.
  3. Demonstrate therapeutic communication techniques that preserve dignity, support health literacy, and maintain professional boundaries.
  4. Implement practical measures that reduce risks from violence, sharps, medication diversion, communicable disease exposure, and patient handling.
  5. Analyze correctional nursing situations involving confidentiality, informed consent, documentation, access to care, advocacy, and dual-role conflict.
  6. Develop a transition plan that supports medication continuity, follow-up care, overdose prevention, and communication during transfer or release.
