Overview

This course prepares RNs and LVNs to locate and apply the Texas Nursing Practice Act and Texas Board of Nursing rules to licensure, scope, delegation, documentation, reporting, and professional conduct. After completing the course, the nurse will be able to evaluate practice situations, use reporting and peer-review pathways appropriately, and recognize conduct that may result in Board investigation or discipline.

Objectives

Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:

  1. Explain the legal authority and regulatory functions of the Texas Board of Nursing.
  2. Differentiate licensure, renewal, scope, supervision, and delegation requirements applicable to RNs and LVNs.
  3. Apply Texas standards of nursing practice to clinical assignments, documentation, communication, and patient advocacy.
  4. Determine when conduct requires employer review, nursing peer review, or a report to the Texas Board of Nursing.
  5. Distinguish minor incidents, safe-harbor nursing peer review, prohibited conduct, and potentially sanctionable violations.
  6. Integrate ethical duties, professional boundaries, and patient-centered decision-making into legally compliant nursing practice.
