Overview

This course prepares nurses to explain how COVID-19 vaccines produce immunity, distinguish vaccine platforms, and interpret effectiveness and safety evidence without overstating protection against infection. After completing the course, the nurse will be able to screen patients, administer vaccines safely, recognize adverse events, counsel special populations, and apply current national recommendations while verifying time-sensitive schedules.

Objectives

Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:

  1. Differentiate the immune mechanisms and clinical characteristics of mRNA, viral-vector, and recombinant protein COVID-19 vaccines.
  2. Apply current national COVID-19 vaccination recommendations according to age, vaccination history, immune status, and recent infection.
  3. Evaluate expected reactions, contraindications, precautions, and rare serious adverse events associated with COVID-19 vaccination.
  4. Demonstrate safe vaccine preparation, administration, observation, documentation, and error-management practices.
  5. Counsel pregnant, lactating, immunocompromised, and allergy-affected patients using current evidence and shared decision-making.
  6. Develop an evidence-based plan for post-vaccination symptom management, adverse-event reporting, and continued infection-prevention precautions.
