Overview
This course prepares nurses to distinguish depression, occupational burnout, and suicidal ideation; recognize warning signs and contributing factors; and complete a direct, compassionate initial suicide inquiry. After completing the course, the nurse will be able to take immediate safety actions, support collaborative safety planning and lethal-means safety, connect a colleague with appropriate care, and promote a safer workplace response.
Objectives
Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:
- Differentiate depression, suicidal ideation, occupational burnout, moral distress, and secondary traumatic stress.
- Identify personal, occupational, and organizational factors that may increase or decrease suicide risk among nurses.
- Recognize warning signs that require direct suicide inquiry and urgent clinical evaluation.
- Apply an immediate response pathway when a nurse discloses suicidal thoughts or appears to be in imminent danger.
- Describe the components of a collaborative safety plan, including lethal-means safety and follow-up.
- Select evidence-based organizational practices that reduce stigma, improve access to care, and support nurses after critical events.
