Overview

After completing this course, the nurse will be able to distinguish Alzheimer’s disease from delirium, depression, medication effects, and other causes of cognitive impairment and describe the current diagnostic evaluation. The nurse will also be able to monitor evidence-based treatments and use reality orientation and reminiscence interventions without confrontation, coercion, or avoidable distress.

Objectives

Upon completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to:

  1. Differentiate Alzheimer’s disease, mild cognitive impairment, dementia, delirium, and common potentially reversible contributors to cognitive symptoms.
  2. Describe the clinical, functional, laboratory, imaging, and biomarker components of an Alzheimer’s disease evaluation.
  3. Classify cognitive and functional findings by clinical stage and identify changes that require prompt reassessment.
  4. Compare symptomatic medications and anti-amyloid therapies by indication, expected benefit, major risk, and nursing monitoring needs.
  5. Apply person-centered reality orientation strategies while avoiding confrontation and repeated correction.
  6. Implement and evaluate an individualized reminiscence activity using the person’s preferences, culture, history, and response.
